Q and A

Q:
How could a flood destroy the world?

A:
Noah’s Flood was much more destructive than any 40-day rainstorm ever could be. Scripture says that “all the fountains of the great deep” broke open (see Gen. 7:11). In other words, earthquakes, volcanoes, and geysers of molten lava and scalding water were squeezed out of the earth’s crust in a violent, explosive upheaval. These fountains were not stopped until 150 days into the Flood—so the earth was literally churning underneath the waters for about five months! The duration of the Flood was extensive, and Noah and his family were aboard the Ark for over a year.

Relatively recent local floods, volcanoes, and earthquakes—though clearly devastating to life and land—are tiny in comparison to the worldwide catastrophe that destroyed “the world that then existed” (2 Pet. 3:6). All land animals and people not on board the Ark were destroyed in the floodwaters—billions of animals were preserved in the great fossil record we see today.

2 Peter 2:5 ... and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly

Always be vigilant

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
–1 Peter 5:8

When I was in the hospital in Hawaii, I read again of the shocking events which led up to the destruction of the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor. On that fateful day of December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked. We know now that that attack was invited by our failure to be always vigilant. The result was the destruction of our fleet—the cause was tragic indifference. When comfort and ease and pleasure are put ahead of duty and conviction, progress is always set back.

What makes us Christians shrug our shoulders when we ought to be flexing our muscles? What makes us apathetic in a day when there are loads to lift, a world to be won, and captives to be set free? Why are so many bored, when the times demand action? Christ told us that in the last days there would be an insipid attitude toward life.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Take away the apathy, Father, that so often blinds my vision.

Questioning

“Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.”
–Psalm 51:12 (TLB)

It is not unusual for persons in their early twenties to defect from their early teaching. The reasons are many. Perhaps their exposure to unbelief “took” better than their exposure to belief. This is often the case, for the Bible says, “The heart of man is deceitful above all things.”

The human heart is as prepared by sin to accept unbelief as faith. Some person they regard highly has undoubtedly influenced their thinking; and for the time being they look on their early training as “bunk.” As someone has said, “A little learning may take a man away from God, but full understanding will bring him back.”

Some of the staunchest Christians I know are people who had periods in their life when they questioned the Bible, Christ, and God. But as they continued to examine the matter, there was overwhelming evidence that only “the fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
I pray for all the questioning people today, Lord, remembering times in my own life when unbelief reigned.

Mighty tempest

The storms of this life tell a thinking person that all is not well between humanity and God. The tempest of His anger sent the Genesis curse across the sea of humanity and this earthly abode. Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, famine, drought, disease, and death tell us that we do not have harmony with Heaven.

It is because of death that every sensible man cries out to his god. Every civilization has a measure of faith in some god. We have yet to discover an atheistic civilization. Primitive man is ignorant, but he is not that ignorant. In his darkened mind, he worships the sun or an idol made by his hands. He practices some form of sacrifice to try to appease his god because he can see that he lives on the brink of death.

He tries through his own religious effects to “lighten the ship.” But religion cannot save him from death. His own labors are not able to deliver him. It is not by any works of righteousness that we are saved, but only according to His mercy (see Eph. 2:8,9; Titus 3:5).

Jonah 1:4 But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

The Debt

Who gave himself for our sins . . .
–Galatians 1:4

Years ago King Charles V was loaned a large sum of money by a merchant in Antwerp. The note came due, but the king was bankrupt and unable to pay. The merchant gave a great banquet for the King. When all the guests were seated and before the food was brought in, the merchant had a large platter placed on the table and a fire lighted on it. Then, taking the note out of his pocket, he held it in the flames until it was burned to ashes. The king threw his arms around his benefactor and wept. Just so, we have been mortgaged to God. The debt was due, but we were unable to pay. Two thousand years ago God invited the world to the Gospel feast, and in the agonies of the cross, God held your sins and mine until every last vestige of our guilt was consumed.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
In gratitude I kneel before You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Hear and understand

It’s clear from Scripture that a genuine convert is one who hears and “understands” (see Matt. 13:23). Perhaps this is why Philip the evangelist asked the Ethiopian eunuch if he understood what he was reading (Acts 8:30). This understanding seems to refer not only to sin, but also to the gospel.

My great desire is for sinners to understand the gospel and be saved. Although God alone saves the sinner, from the sowing to the reaping, I believe that, as a preacher of the gospel, my job is to strive (with the help of God) to bring about "understanding." So rather than using “enticing words of man’s wisdom” (1 Cor. 2:4), I keep the message simple in the hope that the sinner will grasp what I am trying to say.

My gospel presentation may begin with a parable about a man stealing another man’s lamb (as with Nathan and David), or with a quote by Athenian poets (as with Paul when he preached in Athens). I may use metaphors, similes, statistics, quotes, personal experiences, and of course I present the Law, the gospel, and the necessity of repentance and faith.

Jeremiah 50:7 All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, We have not offended, Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, The Lord, the hope of their fathers.

God our helper

I am like a sheltered olive tree protected by the Lord himself. I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.
–Psalm 52:8 (TLB)

Turn to your Bible and read the wonderful stories of men who were alone in godless surroundings but who, by the help and presence of the living God, made a marvelous contribution to their own times. Joseph was surrounded by sin and intrigue in Egypt. His master’s wife tried to seduce him. He was tested by imprisonment, but through it all he trusted in God and sought to know and do His will; and he stands today as a wonderful example of the keeping and strengthening power of God in the heart of a man who believed in Him.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
In the dark days, I will put out my hand and You, loving Lord, will be there.

Victory: Charges Dismissed Against Street Preacher Cited with Disorderly Conduct for Preaching in Public Near Princeton University’s Eating Clubs

PRINCETON, N.J.—The Rutherford Institute has secured a First Amendment victory for a Christian street preacher who was charged with disorderly conduct and accused of engaging in “tumultuous” behavior for preaching in public near Princeton University’s historic eating clubs. Appearing before the Princeton Borough Municipal Court in defense of street preacher Michael Stockwell, Institute attorneys pointed out that Stockwell’s purely religious message, his preaching on a public right-of-way in Princeton, N.J., near the historic University eating clubs, and his use of a small amplifier to make himself heard over the street noise did not constitute tumultuous behavior and were protected by the First Amendment. Stockwell was found not guilty.
“The First Amendment does not permit free speech to be conditioned upon how others feel about the message,” said John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. “As former Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black recognized, ‘The very reason for the First Amendment is to make the people of this country free to think, speak, write and worship as they wish, not as the Government commands.’”
On Saturday, October 8, 2011, a small group of Christian street preachers including Michael Stockwell attempted to speak about their religious beliefs with passersby near the historic eating clubs near Princeton University. Prior to engaging in this free speech activity, Stockwell reviewed the local noise ordinance and contacted the local police to make sure that he could use a small amplifier to make himself heard over the street noise. Stockwell was assured that there would be no problem with his use of a small amplifier, provided he was not blocking the sidewalk. However, when the street preachers began preaching with the amplifier in a public right-of-way on Prospect Avenue, police ordered them to turn the device off because the police department had received a complaint about their preaching. Although Stockwell explained that he had already cleared the use of the amplifier with the department, he complied with the police’s order. The street preachers then resumed preaching, without the aid of an amplifier to make themselves heard over the noise of the eating clubs, only to be approached by another police officer, who allegedly claimed that they were “scaring” people with their message and ordered the preachers to vacate the public right-of-way. When the street preachers refused to stop preaching, the police issued Stockwell a citation for his prior use of amplification—a charge that was later modified to Disorderly Conduct, which applies to “violent or tumultuous” behavior.
In coming to Stockwell’s defense, attorneys with The Rutherford Institute entered a not guilty plea in the Princeton Borough Municipal Court. During the trial, Institute attorneys asked that the disorderly conduct charge be dismissed on the grounds that Stockwell’s religious message was protected by the First Amendment. Moreover, Institute attorneys took issue with Stockwell being cited for disorderly conduct on the basis of the content of his speech, “tumultuous” or not. Stockwell was found not guilty and the charges against him dismissed. Affiliate attorney F. Michael Daily, Jr. assisted The Rutherford Institute in its defense of Stockwell.

Let love be your motive

Continually check the spirit in which you preach. Be careful of sarcasm, condescension, or a self-righteous spirit. It’s easy to react in a sinful manner when people call you names, cuss at you, say things that aren’t true, talk over you, and twist your words. The key is to always let love be your motivation. We don’t like rejection or humiliation, and it’s only the love of God in us that can give us the grace to handle such things.

It is a sad testimony to our lack of love that we had to be commanded to preach the gospel to every creature (see Mark 16:15). It reveals something about our sinful character. When we are held captive to our fears it reveals our lack of love. What would you think of a doctor who had a cure to cancer in his hand, and had to be commanded to take it to his dying patients? Imagine if you asked him why he was hesitating and he said, “I’m afraid they will laugh at me” or, “It’s not my gifting to take it to them,” or, “I don’t know what to say to them.” As Charles Spurgeon said, “We must be ashamed at the mere suspicion of unconcern.” So if we lack enough love to preach or we lack love when preaching, we need to get on our knees and ask afresh for the help of God.

“If we are devoted to the cause of humanity, we shall soon be crushed and brokenhearted, for we shall often meet with more ingratitude from men than we would from a dog; but if our motive is love to God, no ingratitude can hinder us from serving our fellow men.” Oswald Chambers

Leviticus 19:18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

The persistent spider

There is a stubborn web of sin that continually plagues mankind. It is the web of violence, corruption, rape, greed, wars, theft, etc. We try to sweep it away through political means. Yet these crimes continue, and the root cause of the problem remains in hiding. We must use the stick of God’s Law to gently tap on the human heart. Suddenly, the cause of sin appears. And that is when sin can be put to death with the power of the gospel. So hold still while I “tap” you with God’s Law to see if we can find the spider. Do you consider yourself to be a good person—have you kept the Ten Commandments?

Isaiah 59:5 They hatch vipers eggs and weave the spiders web; He who eats of their eggs dies, And from that which is crushed a viper breaks out.

Joy of Sharing

We . . . offer our sacrifice of praise to God by telling others of the glory of his name.
–Hebrews 13:15 (TLB)

Jesus knew that one of the real tests of our yieldedness to God is our willingness to share with others. If we have no mercy toward others, that is one proof that we have never experienced God’s mercy. Emerson must have been reading the gauge of human mercy when he said, “What you are speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.” Satan does not care how much you theorize about Christianity, or how much you profess to know Christ. What he opposes vigorously is the way you live Christ.

Some time ago a lady wrote and said, “I am 65 years old. My children are all married, my husband is dead, and I am one of the loneliest people in all the world.” It was suggested to her that she find a way of sharing her religious faith and her material goods with those around her. She wrote a few weeks later and said, “I am the happiest woman in town. I have found a new joy and happiness in sharing with others.” That’s exactly what Jesus promised!

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
There is no greater joy, Father, than sharing Your love. Help me to convey this in all my dealings with others.

Q and A

Q:
How do you respond when someone says 'Well nobody is perfect'?

A:
Agree with him. The person is seeking to justify his sinful heart by spreading the blame around all of humanity, and at the same time inferring that the standard God requires is too high. Say, “That’s right; you are not perfect. You are a self-admitted liar, thief, etc., and you have to stand before a perfect God whose Law you have violated and give an account of your actions. What are you going to say? You can’t justify yourself. And you are right about no one being perfect. We have all sinned, and we are all heading for hell.”

The person’s words reveal a subtle form of self-righteousness, and you have to chop that out with the sharp axe of the Law. So cut deep and get it all out. You want to bring him to a point of acknowledging, “I have sinned against God.” His sin is personal. Study Paul’s use of the Law in Rom. 2:21–23. He stirred the conscience and made it personal. Nathan did the same thing with David when he said, “You are the man!” Study the opening verses of Psa. 51 to see how personal David knew his transgression was—knowledge that came from the prophet’s rebuke. His actions weren’t “imperfect”; he calls what he did “evil.”

Ephesians 4:13 ... till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

He died for us

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
–Romans 5:8

As we stand at the cross of Christ we see a glorious exhibition of God’s love. Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, “While we were powerless to help ourselves . . . Christ died for sinful men.” In human experience, it is a rare thing for one man to give his life for another, even if the latter be a good man, though there have been a few who have had the courage to do it. Yet the proof of God’s amazing love is this: that it was “while we were sinners Christ died for us.”

"A beautiful young society leader came to visit my wife and me. She had been converted to Christ in one of our Crusades, and she was absolutely radiant in her transformation. Already she had learned scores of Scripture verses by heart and was so full of Christ that we sat for two hours listening to her give her moving testimony. Over and over she said, “I cannot understand how God could forgive me. I have been such a wicked sinner. I just cannot understand the love of God.” -Billy Graham

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
It is beyond comprehension the love that took You to the cross for me. Humbly I praise and thank You, my Savior and my Lord.

Repentance may not be popular

Do we remove words that might offend, such as “repentance” and “hell” to make the message more acceptable, or to make ourselves acceptable to a God-hating world? God forbid that our concern should be for our own comfort, rather than for the eternal welfare of the world.

“From Athens to Los Angeles, first century to twenty-first century and everywhere in between, repentance may not be popular, but it’s still the gospel.” John MacArthur

Ezekiel 18:30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord God. Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.

God Promises

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs and don’t forget to thank him for his answers.
–Philippians 4:6 (TLB)

Historians will probably call our era “the age of anxiety.” Anxiety is the natural result when our hopes are centered in anything short of God and His will for us. When we make anything else our goal,
frustration and defeat are inevitable. Though we have less to worry about than previous generations, we have more worry. Though we have it easier than our forefathers, we have more uneasiness. Though we have less real cause for anxiety than our predecessors, we are inwardly more anxious. Calloused hands were the badge of the pioneer, but a furrowed brow is the insignia of modern man.

God has never promised to remove all our troubles, problems, and difficulties. In fact, sometimes I think the truly committed Christian is in conflict with the society around him more than any other person. Society is going in one direction, and the Christian is going in the opposite direction. This brings about friction and conflict. But God has promised, in the midst of trouble and conflict, a genuine peace, a sense of assurance and security, that the worldly person never knows.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus, teach me to keep my eyes centered on You rather than on myself and my anxieties. Help me to allow You to give me peace of heart and mind today.

Fear is Poison

If the enemy cannot use apathy to cause us to cease from our labors on behalf of the gospel, he will use intimidation. Fear is his poison, but faith is the antidote.

“Let those who are tempted to idle merry meetings by vain companions, thus answer the temptation, We have work to do, and must not neglect it. We must never suffer ourselves to be overcome, by repeated urgency, to do anything sinful or imprudent; but when attacked with the same temptation, must resist it with the same reason and resolution...Nehemiah lifted up his heart to heaven in a short prayer. When, in our Christian work and warfare, we enter upon any service or conflict, this is a good prayer, I have such a duty to do, such a temptation to grapple with; now, therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Every temptation to draw us from duty, should quicken us the more to duty.” Matthew Henry

Nehemiah 6:8 Then I sent to him, saying, No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.9 For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

Love in Action

Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ . . .
–Ephesians 5:2 (TLB)

There is no doubt that we need social reform. If success is ever to be realized, our generations must work together and listen to each other, which is one of the first requirements of cooperation. At this point, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant as the great reconciler. The Apostle John, in his first epistle, declared, “To you, young men, I have written,” and, “To you, fathers, I have written.” This is to the young activists and to the old guard, “It is by this that we know what love is: that Christ laid down His life for us. And we in our turn are bound to lay down our lives for our brothers. But if a man has enough to live on, and yet when he sees his brother in need shuts up his heart against him, how can it be said that the divine love dwells in him? My children, love must not be a matter of words or talk; it must be genuine, and show itself in action. This is how we may know that we belong to the realm of truth” (1 John 3:16–19, NEB).

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, when someone disagrees with my opinions, may my love not be determined by rhetoric, but by the all–encompassing love of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Safe Light

“Listen to no man who fails to listen to God. No man has any right to counsel others who is not ready to hear and follow the counsel of the Lord. True moral wisdom must always be an echo of God’s voice. The only safe light for our path is the light which is reflected from Christ, the Light of the World.” A. W. Tozer

Our Basic Need

. . . he hath set his love upon me . . .
–Psalm 91:14

A basic need of mankind is affection. Those who “abide in Him” are objects of God’s affection and love. You cannot say that you are friendless when Christ has said, “Henceforth I call you not servants . . . but I have called you friends” (John 15:15). To you who lament the fact that you have been bereft of affection and love in this life, I happily commend Christ. He loved you enough to lay down His
life for you. Not only that, but by His atonement upon the cross, He purchased the favor of God in your behalf, and now through Him you may be the recipient of the grace and love of God without measure.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Thank You for Your love, Father, that no matter where I am—in whatever situation—You are there, loving me.

Lift up your voice and weep

It was love that drove Hagar to cry out to God for the child. How can love not compel us to lift up our voices and weep, given the impending deaths of multitudes around us? God has opened our eyes to see the wells of salvation in Christ, so we must lead sinners by the hand to Him who cried, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37).

"I could abundantly justify compassion for perishing men, even on the ground of natural feelings. A mother who did not, like Hagar, weep for her dying child—call her not ‘mother,’ call her ‘monster.’ A man who passes through the scenes of misery which even this city presents in its more squalid quarters, and yet is never disturbed by them, I venture to say he is unworthy of the name of man. Even the common sorrows of our race may well suffuse our eyes with tears, but the eternal sorrow, the infinite lake of misery—he who grieves not for this, write him down a demon, though he wear the image and semblance of a man." -- Charles Spurgeon

Genesis 21:16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, Let me not see the death of the boy. So she sat opposite him,and lifted her voice and wept.17 And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.

Depend on Him

I advise you to obey only the Holy Spirit’s instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won’t always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to.
–Galatians 5:16 (TLB)

To walk in the Spirit is a challenging and inspiring exercise, for it combines activity with relaxation. To walk means to place one foot in front of the other. If you stop doing this, you are no longer walking—you are standing still. Walking always implies movement, progress, and direction. Sin shall no longer rule or dominate you when you are allowing the Holy Spirit to live Christ’s life through you. It is living by faith, living by trust, living in dependence upon God.

If we look to our own resources, our own strength, or our own ability, as Peter did when he walked on the water, we will fail. You cannot live the Christian life by yourself. The Holy Spirit must live in you and express Himself through you. Living for Christ is a day-by-day experience. It is a continuous dependence upon the Spirit of God. It is believing in His faithfulness.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord, so often I have walked on my own instead of walking in Your Spirit. Guide my footsteps this day, I pray in Jesus’ name.

Completely Saved

“You may be now saved—completely saved, and live in the full enjoyment of that knowledge. ‘If thou seek him, he will be found of thee.’ The notion is that there are a great many very mysterious preliminaries, a great deal to do, and a great deal to be, and all quite beyond our power. It is not so, but seek him. We will tell you what that means, and he that seeks him finds him. ‘If thou seek him, he will be found of thee’” It has been supposed that we should want a good deal of help in seeking after salvation. Certain persons who step in to be absolutely necessary priests between us and God. A great delusion, but there be thousands who believe it and who fancy that God won’t hear them if they pray, except they have some respect for these human mediators. Away with the whole, away with any pretence for anyone to stand between the soul and God, save Jesus Christ. ‘If thou seek him, he will be found of thee.’” Charles Spurgeon

Hosea 4:6

This is one of the most commonly quoted verses in the Old Testament, but rarely is it quoted in full. This is not referring to general knowledge; people are not destroyed due to ignorance of book learning. Rather, people were destroyed through a lack of knowledge of God’s Law (v. 6). If a nation forsakes the Law of God, it has no knowledge of sin (see Rom. 7:7).

Those who have no knowledge of sin cannot repent (how can they, if they don’t know what sin is?); and if they don’t repent, the Bible warns that they will perish (Luke 13:3).

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

The Hope of Resurrection

He which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus . . .
–2 Corinthians 4:14

The resurrection of Christ brings hope. The late Emil Brunner once said, “What oxygen is for the lungs, such is hope for the meaning of human life.” As the human organism is dependent on a supply of oxygen, so humanity is dependent on its supply of hope. Yet today hopelessness and despair are everywhere. Peter, who himself was given to despair during the episode of Calvary, writes in a triumphant note, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again into a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

There is hope that mistakes and sins can be forgiven. There is hope that we can have joy, peace, assurance, and security in the midst of the despair of this age. There is hope that Christ is coming soon—this is what is called in Scripture “the blessed hope.” There is hope that there will come some day a new heaven and a new earth, and that the Kingdom of God will reign and triumph. Our hope is not in our own ability, or in our goodness, or in our physical strength. Our hope is instilled in us by the resurrection of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
My hope is in You, my resurrected Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! May I never despair, as I remember Your triumph and love.

Q and A

Question:
“I thought God was supposed to be our friend, not our enemy.”

Answer:
Most people are shocked to learn that the Bible doesn’t paint God as a friend of humanity. That picture doesn’t go with their image of God. But the Bible makes it clear that our sins alienate us from Him, and paints a picture of a wicked and guilty criminal before a good Judge. Col. 1:21 describes the lost as “alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works.” Rom. 8:7 says that “the carnal mind is enmity [in a state of hostility] against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.” The unregenerate mind spits blasphemy out of an unclean mouth. We are filled with rebellion toward God, and specifically His moral Law.

Jesus said, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14, emphasis added). It is essential to note the second part of the verse. We are enemies of God as long as we are friends with this sinful world (see James 4:4,5).

2 Chronicles 20:7 Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?

Wisdom to Understand

Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest.
–Genesis 28:15

When Jesus uttered His words of comfort in the first few verses of the fourteenth chapter of John’s Gospel, concluding with, “And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know” (John 14:4), Thomas said unto Him, “Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Jesus answered him with a statement which has in it the ring of eternity. It was sublimely simple and yet profoundly deep. Its surface meaning was clear to all, and yet the great theologians have never completely sounded its mighty depths. This is that statement, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

In one majestic sweep, these words silenced Thomas’ questioning tongue and brought reassurance and peace to the hearts of the other disciples. Within the marvel of that authoritative sentence from the lips of the Son of God, there was enough comfort to assuage the sufferings of the tormented, enough wisdom to satisfy those who yearned for understanding, and enough power to set the great Christian movement in motion.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Knowing You are with me is all the comfort I need, Lord.

Q and A

Question:
“The chief priests didn’t see Jesus coming with the clouds or sitting in power, so He’s a false prophet.”

Response:
You forget that the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice (see John 5:28). There is going to be a resurrection of the just and the unjust (see Acts 24:15). Every eye will see Him. The chief priests will bow the knee before Him. So will Hitler and every murderer, rapist, thief, and liar. All will bow down to Jesus Christ and confess Him as Lord of the universe (see Rom. 14:11; Phil. 2:10,11). He is the Creator of all things (see Col. 1:16), and every human being will see Him in His glory, including you. John trembled in terror when he saw the resurrected Christ, shining with a brightness greater than the sun (see Acts 26:13).

So it would be wise to stop asking whether He was a false prophet. Instead confess and forsake your sins, and put your trust in Him while He extends His mercy to sinful men and women. He has waited for 2,000 years because He is not willing that any perish, but that all come to repentance (see 2 Pet. 3:9). Everything Jesus said would happen has happened throughout history (see Matt. 24; Luke 21), and you can therefore bet your very soul that those men Jesus said would see His coming as sure as hell will see it.

Mark 14:62 Jesus said, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.

Evidence of Jesus

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore . . .
–Revelation 1:18

Certain laws of evidence hold in the establishment of any historic event. Documentation of the event in question must be made by reliable contemporary witnesses. There is more evidence that Jesus rose from the dead than there is that Julius Caesar ever lived, or that Alexander the Great died at the age of 33. It is strange that historians will accept thousands of facts for which they can produce only shreds of evidence. But in the face of the overwhelming evidence of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, they cast a skeptical eye and hold intellectual doubts. The trouble with many people is that they do not want to believe. They are so completely prejudiced that they cannot accept the glorious fact of the resurrection of Christ on Bible testimony alone.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus, I know You are alive—for You live in the hearts of all those who love You!

The Ultimate Day

All of God’s terrible judgments against Israel were according to righteousness. He simply did what was right and just by punishing them for their sins (see Deut. 31:17). The Day of Judgment will be the ultimate Day when God manifests His righteous judgments according to the sins of humanity, right down to every idle word men speak (see Matt. 12:36). What a fearful thing it will be to fall into the hands of the Living God. We must warn this sinful world that we may present every man and woman perfect in Christ Jesus (see Col. 1:28).

Ezekiel 39:23 The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore I hid My face from them. I gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.

His Return

Our homeland is in heaven, where our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ is; and we are looking forward to his return . . .
–Philippians 3:20 (TLB)

The Scriptures indicate that we are living in man’s day. But there is coming a day that will be called the Day of the Lord. In the midst of hopelessness, there is hope! And that hope is centered in the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ. Now the will of man runs riot in the earth. Then the will of the Lord will alone be done. Until that time, we are under orders from the King of kings to proclaim His message. When we engage in evangelism, we are obeying His great command to “go and proclaim.” In doing so, we are hastening the day of His return.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
As I live in the hope of Your return, give me the wisdom and love to reach those around me.

Justice will be done

If there were no hell, and no ultimate justice, then the Almighty would be guilty of perverting justice.

There were approximately 200,000 homicides committed during the 1990s, only half of which were solved. That means more than 100,000 murderers were never brought to justice from 1990–2000. Think of it. In one decade over 100,000 people were stabbed, shot, strangled, poisoned, had their throats cut, etc., and the murderers got away free. If God is not going to punish them for such terrible crimes, then He is unjust.

However, the opposite is the case. God will bring to justice every secret thing, whether it is good or evil (see Ecc. 12;14). He will be so thorough, so sweeping in His justice that He will consider hatred to be murder (see 1 John 3:15) and will judge humanity right down to the thoughts and intents of the heart.

In 2001, a man in the U.S. was sentenced to twelve years in prison for conspiring to kill his wife. She was planning to take everything he had through a bitter divorce, and he decided that murdering her would solve his problem. He was caught because his hateful thoughts were made known to a hit man, who recorded them on video. True hatred conspires to murder (within the mind) and as God has access to human thought, He also considers the person guilty even if he hasn’t physically carried out the crime.

Job 8:3 Does God subvert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert justice?

Legal Transaction

I may equate repentance to a criminal who becomes law-abiding and shows his sincerity by returning stolen goods. I perhaps will explain saving faith by differentiating it from an intellectual belief, and likening it to trusting a pilot or a parachute. I speak of the cross by explaining that it’s like a civil judge paying a criminal’s fine, thus satisfying the law and at the same time extending mercy. All these things are aimed at (with the help of God) bringing understanding to the sinner. If he doesn’t understand the gospel, he won’t value it and seek the Savior.

I then explain, “It was a legal transaction. You broke God’s Law (the Ten Commandments), and Jesus paid your fine in His life’s blood. That means that God can legally dismiss your case. You can leave the courtroom on the Day of Judgment because your fine has been paid. Does that make sense?”

Jeremiah 40:7 All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, We have not offended, Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, The Lord, the hope of their fathers.

Shine your Light

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
–Matthew 5:16

One faithful witness is worth a thousand mute professors of religion. Tom Allan, Scotland’s famous young preacher, was brought to Christ while a black soldier was singing, “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” He said it was neither the song nor the voice, but the spirit in which that soldier sang—something about his manner, something about his sincerity of expression—that convicted him of his wicked life and turned him to the Savior. Our faith grows by expression. If we want to keep our faith, we must share it—we must witness.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
May others be drawn to You, Lord Jesus, as I tell them why you had to hang on that tree.

Noah's Ark

Unlike many whimsical drawings that depict the Ark as some kind of overgrown houseboat (with giraffes sticking out the top, for example), the Ark as described in the Bible was a big vessel. Not until relatively recent times (in the late 1800s) was a ship built—using steel—that far exceeded the capacity of Noah’s Ark.

The dimensions of the Ark are convincing for two reasons: the proportions are like that of a modern cargo ship, and it is about as large as a wooden ship can be built. The cubit gives us a good indication of size. (The cubit was defined as the length of the forearm from elbow to fingertip. Ancient cubits vary anywhere from 17.5 inches to 22 inches, with the longer sizes dominating the major ancient construc- tions. Even a conservative 18-inch cubit describes a sizable vessel.)

We know the Ark must have been at least 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Using a longer cubit, it would have been over 500 feet in length. In the Western world, wooden sailing ships never got much longer than about 330 feet, yet much earlier the ancient Greeks were building vessels at least this size. China built huge wooden ship s in the 1400s that may have been as large as the Ark. The biblical Ark is one of the largest wooden ships of all time, a mid-sized cargo ship even by today’s standards.

The Ark had three decks (Gen. 6:16), so this gives you an idea of its overall size. With a capacity of 1.5 million cubic feet, it would have had sufficient room for all the people, animals, and supplies.

Citizenship in Heaven

When we rejoice because our names are written in heaven, we can have joy even though the fig tree fails to yield its crop, the car runs out of gas, the bank account runs dry, and the cupboard is bare. Our citizenship is in heaven. That is our true home.

“Heaven is not here, it’s There. If we were given all we wanted here, our hearts would settle for this world rather than the next. God is forever luring us up and away from this one, wooing us to Himself and His still invisible Kingdom, where we will certainly find what we so keenly long for.” Elisabeth Elliot

Habakkuk 3:17 Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.19 The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deers feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.

Do not trust your heart

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him . . .
–Luke 23:33

One of the ironies of human nature is that it often has a way of rejecting the best and accepting the worst. Why did the crowd ask for the release of Barabbas and the crucifixion of Jesus? The answer is in the biblical statement, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” Jesus is just as divine today and just as much alive as He was on that first Good Friday. Yet millions today don’t accept Him. His goodness is still a rebuke to our badness; His purity still shows up our impurities; His sinlessness still reveals our sinfulness; and unless we allow Him to destroy the evil within us, the evil within us still wants to destroy Him. This is the conflict of the ages.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus, when I reflect upon the agony of Your death at Calvary, my heart is once again humbled at the magnitude of Your love for all mankind.

Sinful Human Nature

Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the world’s sin.
–John 1:29 (TLB)

At the cross of Christ, sin reached its climax. Its most terrible display took place at Calvary. It was never blacker or more hideous. We see the human heart laid bare and its corruption fully exposed. Some people have said that man has improved since that day, that if Christ came back today, He would not be crucified but would be given a glorious reception. Christ does come to us every day in the form of Bibles that we do not read, in the form of churches that we do not attend, in the form of human need that we pass by. I am convinced that if Christ came back today, He would be crucified more quickly than He was two thousand years ago. Sin never improves. Human nature has not changed.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Father, take away my thoughts and deeds that crucify Jesus afresh.

What makes Christianity different

He is not here, but is risen.
–Luke 24:6

Something distinguishes Christianity from all the religions of the world. Not only does it carry the truth of the redemption, by the death of our Savior for our sins on the cross, but it carries the fact that Christ rose again. Only the Christian faith claims that its Leader died and rose again and is alive at this moment. Many gravestones carry the inscription, “Here lies . . . ,” but on Christ’s tomb are emblazoned the words, “He is not here.” Christianity has no shrines to visit, no dusty remains to venerate, no tombs at which to worship. Many good men have lived, and still live, in the memory of those who knew them, but there is only one Man who conquered death—Jesus Christ—and He will live forever.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
The account of Your resurrection never ceases to bring me joy, Lord Jesus.

Laboring

We are laboring together with God to build the everlasting house of the Lord, made up of the living stones of believers. Do you carry a burden for the lost? We should spare no expense of time, effort, or money, when it comes to reaching even one soul for Christ.

“One single soul saved shall outlive and outweigh all the kingdoms of the world.” J. C. Ryle

1 Kings 5:13 Then King Solomon raised up a labor force out of all Israel; and the labor force was thirty thousand men.14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month in shifts: they were one month in Lebanon and two months at home; Adoniram was in charge of the labor force.15 Solomon had seventy thousand who carried burdens, and eighty thousand who quarried stone in the mountains

Weak minded Christians

I have lost count of how many times I have heard that Christianity is a crutch for weak-minded people who cannot make it in life without faith. That may be, but we are not the only ones who need to lean on something. Do you know how many people use alcohol and drugs as a “crutch” to get them through life, or how many cannot walk into a room without clutching onto a cigarette? According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, over 22 million Americans are addicted to drug abuse and alcohol. Those sorts of crutches tend to snap and leave the patient in a worse state.

Faith in God is not like that. He will never let you down, in this short life or in the life to come. You can lean on Him. I don’t have to be concerned with the troubles of the future, because the future is in His hands. He is already there, so nothing takes Him by surprise. A “crutch” is a poor metaphor for the Savior. It is more accurate to say that faith in Jesus is like a “parachute,” and that death is a fearful jump into eternity. The Bible tells us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” You may believe that a parachute is a crutch, used by weak-minded people who cannot handle the jump by themselves. If that is the case, then I am weak-minded. I need a Savior.

Judges 16:7 And Samson said to her, If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
HE IS RISEN!!!

Long wait

“Joseph, who was to be only a servant to Pharaoh, was preferred at thirty years old; but Moses, who was to be a god to Pharaoh, was not so dignified till he was eighty years old. It is fit he should long wait for such an honor, and be long in preparing for such a service.” John Wesley

Exodus 7:7 And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Despised and Rejected

Here is a biblical philosophy by which we should live: “Jesus was despised and rejected by men” (see Isa. 53:3). That’s the bottom line. If we live for Him, we too will be despised and rejected by men. Anything on top of that is a bonus. When He fed multitudes and healed the sick, they loved Him. But when He spoke of sin, righteousness, and judgment, they hated Him. Jesus said that the world hated Him because He testified that its works were evil. He also said that if the world hated Him, it would hate us. When you and I do what Jesus did, we shouldn’t be surprised to get what Jesus got.

Isaiah 5:24 Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, And the flame consumes the chaff, So their root will be as rottenness, And their blossom will ascend like dust; Because they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Prayer

God always answers prayer.  Sometimes He says yes; sometimes He says no, and sometimes He says, "Wait for a minute." And since to the Lord a day is as a thousand years (2Peter 3:8), that could mean a ten year wait for us.  So ask in faith, but rest in peace-filled patience.

Surveys show that more than 90% of Americans pray daily.  No doubt they pray for health, wealth, happiness, etc.  They also pray when grandma gets sick, and when grandma doesn't get better (or dies), many end up disillusioned or bitter.  This is because they don't understand what the Bible says about prayer.  It teaches, among other things, that our sin will keep God from even hearing our prayer (Psalm 66:18), and that if we pray with doubt, we will not get an answer (James 1:6,7).

Jesus says (Mark 11:22-26), believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.  When you pray do you say, 'well if it happens, it's God's will and that's great.  But if it doesn't happen, it wasn't God's will and that's okay'.  If you were to tell me your name, and where you work and I told you, "I don't believe that" no matter how many times you tell me, and I keep telling you I don't believe you, you would probably get offended.  Because if I don't believe you that mean I think you're devious, you're a liar, you're not worth trusting.  And if you as a mere man are offended in my lack of faith in you're words, how much more offended is a Holy God in your lack of faith in His precious promises that are to be more desired than gold?!  So how much do you value prayer?  Is it boring to you?  Or do you see it as what it truly is which is the extreme privilege to come before the throne room of glory asking what you will for His glory, for His kingdom, for His praise and worship.

Think about the cross today!  Think about your own sins...do they grieve you at all?  Do they keep you from communicating with your Father in Heaven?  There is an intercessor. Jesus Christ suffered and died on a cross for payment of your sins.  Those healing carpenter hands that once held nails and wood, were now being held by nails to wood! God commended His love towards us in this.  That while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Do you know that it was a legal transaction that took place on the cross?!  We broke God's law (lying, thieving, looking with lust, etc), but Jesus stepped in and paid our fine in His blood.  God can now legally dismiss our case. Please think about this, especially today! Thanks for reading, and as always God bless you!

Know the Bible

Search the Book of the Lord . . .
–Isaiah 34:16 (TLB)

A knowledge of the Bible is essential to a rich and meaningful life. For the words of this Book have a way of filling in the missing pieces, of bridging the gaps, of turning the tarnished colors of our life to jewel-like brilliance. Learn to take your every problem to the Bible. Within its pages you will find the correct answer. But most of all, the Bible is a revelation of the nature of God. The philosophers of the centuries have struggled with the problem of a Supreme Being. Who is He? What is He? Where is He? If there is such a Person, is He interested in me? If so, how can I know Him? These and a thousand other questions about God are answered in this Holy Book we call the Bible.

How Incredible

God made all things with the utterance of His voice. He spoke creation into existence by His Word. Then this same “Word” became flesh and dwelt among us (see John 1:1–3). How incredible.

Max Planck, the father of Quantum Mechanics and Nobel Prize winner in physics, stated, “As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”

Jeremiah 51:15 He has made the earth by His power; He has established the world by His wisdom, And stretched out the heaven by His understanding.16 When He utters His voice There is a multitude of waters in the heavens: He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightnings for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries.

Hallelujah what a Savior

It was written long ago that the Messiah must suffer and die and rise again from the dead on the third day.
–Luke 24:46 (TLB)

What was the power and influence that changed the cross from an instrument of bloody torture into the most glorious and beloved of all symbols? The Romans crucified thousands of people before and after Calvary. If Jesus had not risen from the dead, no right-minded person would have glorified anything so hideous and repulsive as a cross stained with the blood of Jesus. By the miracle of His rising from the grave, Jesus placed the seal of assurance upon the forgiveness of our sins.

A dead Christ could not have been our Savior. An unopened grave would never have opened heaven. By bursting the chains of the tomb, Jesus proved Himself to all ages the conqueror of sin. The sacrifice on Calvary had fulfilled its purpose; the ransom price paid for your sins and mine had been accepted by God. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Each time I see the empty cross, let me be reminded of Your suffering and Your victory, Lord Jesus.

Some personal Questions

Do you like to snuggle up in a warm bed on a cold night? Do you have a favorite position for going to sleep? Have you ever woken up from a nightmare, and taken several minutes to shake off a feeling of terror?

Has your whole body suddenly “jumped” because you thought you were taking a step, just before you dropped off to sleep?

Do you get annoyed when someone asks you personal questions, or do you feel a sense of identification, because you’ve had these same experiences?

I hope you do identify with me. This is because it is the knowledge that you and I are similar that drives me to try to reach you with the gospel.

We have many of the same loves, fears, desires, and concerns. You, like me, want to enjoy the pleasures of this life. No one in his right mind wants to be unhappy, and you therefore instinctively don’t want to die. Everything within you recoils at the thought of death. It is the ultimate root-canal for which there is no painkiller outside of conversion to Jesus Christ.

So, if you don’t know the Lord, ask yourself some personal questions about me. What is my motive for pleading with you like this? I don’t get paid for doing this. I am not asking for your money, nor am I trying to get you to join a church. It is simply out of a deep concern for your eternal welfare. Please, repent and trust the Savior before death seizes on you and it is too late.

Die to self

The Lord is close to those whose hearts are breaking; he rescues those who are humbly sorry for their sins.
–Psalm 34:18 (TLB)

In God’s economy, you must go down into the valley of grief before you can scale the heights of spiritual glory. You must become tired and weary of living alone before you seek and find the fellowship of Christ. You must come to the end of self before you begin to live. The mourning of inadequacy is a weeping that catches the attention of God. The Bible says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” The happiest day of my life was when I realized that my own ability, my own goodness, and my own morality was insufficient in the sight of God; and I publicly and openly acknowledged my need of Christ. I am not exaggerating when I say that my mourning was turned to joy, and my sighing into singing.

His message Today

“If it were known that God Himself were going to speak once again to man, what eagerness and excitement there would be! For nearly nineteen hundred years He has been silent. No inspired message has been added to the Bible for nearly nineteen hundred years. How eagerly all men would listen if God should speak once more. Yet men forget that the Bible is God's own Word, and that it is as truly His message today as when it was delivered of old. The Law that was given at Sinai has lost none of its solemnity. Time cannot wear out its authority or the fact of its authorship.” D. L. Moody

Ezekiel 7:26 Disaster will come upon disaster, And rumor will be upon rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet; But the law will perish from the priest, And counsel from the elders

Putting Facebook in it's proper place

“…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 NASB

Facebook itself is not an evil thing. But if it is not put in its proper place, it can quickly become an unhealthy addiction in your life - robbing precious time, distracting you from Christ, and putting your mind on the things of this world.

The biggest danger of Facebook is how quickly it can eat away your time. You sit down at your laptop to send a quick message, and then three hours later you are still lost within the endless network of cyber-socializing. And what were you doing in those three hours? If you are honest, you may find that very little of it had any eternal value whatsoever. Those were three hours that could have been used for far better things, such as prayer, studying God’s Word, journaling His work in your life, or serving someone in need. But there is no room for those edifying activities when our best hours are spent on meaningless, trivial things.

The fact that Facebook may have a few redeeming qualities doesn’t warrant allowing it to take up all our time. Remember - it’s not our time anyway, but God’s. And if Jesus wouldn’t spend His time cyber-socializing, why should we?

If time on Facebook has become an unhealthy addiction in your life (meaning you can’t imagine letting it go), prayerfully ask God for the grace to walk away, at least for a season, until He truly has first place in your heart and your best hours are being spent on Him. Recruit an accountability partner if necessary. Remember, nothing is worth jeopardizing your relationship with the Lord who died to save You, and no offering is too extreme when laid at His feet out of a heart of love and devotion to Him!

-Leslie Ludy

Jesus not just a Man

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
–Colossians 1:17

Napoleon was right when he said, “I know men, and I tell you, Jesus is more than a man. Comparison is impossible between Him and any other human being who ever lived, because He was the Son of God.” Emerson was right when he replied to those who asked him why he did not include Jesus among his Representative Men, “Jesus was not just a man.” Arnold Toynbee was right when he said, “As we stand and gaze with our eyes fixed upon the farther shore, a simple figure rises from the flood and straightway fills the whole horizon of history. There is the Savior.”

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
My Savior, I worship and revere Your name for You are the risen Christ, beloved Son of God.

Witness at Work

When we interact with people on a daily basis, we have many opportunities for sharing our faith. First, be sure you are respectful to your employer and set a good example in your work ethic by working “as to the Lord” (Col. 3:23). When others around you grumble and complain, if you have a calm, forgiving, steadfast spirit, it will make an impression. As you respond in a Christlike way to angry coworkers and stressful circumstances, people will see a difference in your life.

If your boss forbids it, don’t witness on work time. Instead, keep a pile of Million Dollar Bills or some other tract on your desk but don’t give them out. If someone asks for one, let them take it. Displaying a favorite Scripture or a devotional calendar, or quietly reading your Bible during lunchtime, may prompt others to inquire about your faith.

To not infringe on your employer’s time, invite unsaved coworkers out to lunch (not the opposite sex) and witness to them there. Just ask for their thoughts on what happens after death. That will let you know if they are open to the gospel. If you detect contention, apologize and instead use closet prayer. Make a list of workers and uphold them before God, asking for divine openings.

In the meantime, let your love shine. Always be friendly and courteous, and show genuine interest in your coworkers’ lives. Share their joys and sorrows by congratulating them in their good times and offering to pray for them in their bad times. Be sure you do pray for them, then follow up by asking them about the situation you prayed for. They will be moved by your concern. If coworkers are discussing what they did during the previous weekend, you can share your excitement about attending church services or a special church event. Ask about their plans for celebrating Christmas or Easter; be nonjudgmental of their answer, and be ready to explain why you celebrate as you do.

Bringing home-baked goods or leaving a small gift with a note on a coworker’s desk can sometimes have a greater impact than a thousand eloquent sermons. We can show our faith by our works. Others may not like a tree of righteousness, but they cannot help but like its fruit.

1 Peter 2:15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men

Using you Mind

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind . . .
–Mark 12:30

Christ touches every area of our lives. He touches our minds and we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. God invites people to use their minds, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 1:18). We are told in Scripture not to be like the horse or mule, “which have no understanding” (Psalm 32:9). Christ declared that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. We are told to fear God, to love Christ, and to hate sin. Fear, love, and hate are emotions. Dr. Leslie Weatherhead, preaching at the City Temple in London, said, “What is wrong with emotion? Christianity is falling in love with Christ. Has anyone ever fallen in love without emotion?”

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
May my love for You embrace my whole being, Lord Jesus. Teach me true love.

Glory in the Cross

As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
–Galatians 6:14 (TLB)

What glory is there in the cross? It was an instrument of torture and shame. Why did Paul glory in it? He gloried in it because the most selfless act ever performed by men or angels took place upon it. He saw—emanating from that rough, unartistic beam upon which the Son of God had been crucified—the radiant hope of the world, the end of the believer’s bondage to sin, and the love of God shed abroad in the hearts of men. A lone man dying on a cross did more to restore man’s lost harmony with God, his fellowman, and himself, than the combined genius and power of earth’s mighty. With my finite limitations, I cannot fully comprehend the mystery of Christ’s atonement. I only know that all who come to the cross in simple, trusting faith lose all their guilty stains and find peace with God.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Like the Apostle Paul, Father, help me to glory in the cross of Jesus and more fully understand the tremendous meaning it has for me as a believer and for all who would come to its foot and kneel.
