Hope beyond death

The righteous hath hope in his death.
–Proverbs 14:32

We don’t like to talk about death; it’s the forbidden subject of our generation. Yet it’s real for all of us. Sometimes on television I see motion pictures featuring actors who are no longer living. They seem very much alive in the picture, but they are dead. Death is real, and when we die, that is a battle we have to fight all alone. Nobody can be with us in that hour, but David said he had found an answer that would take the fear of death away. David said that there is an answer to death, there is a hope beyond death. That hope is centered in the risen Christ. Paul wrote that to be “absent from the body” is to be “present with the Lord.” So the fear of death is removed.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Lord Jesus, with complete trust I look toward that day when my soul will be with You for eternity.

Tremble

Ezekiel 33:8,9. These verses should make every one of us tremble, when we realize how many professed Christians within the Church don’t bother to warn a soul of the coming judgment of God. It would seem that Paul had these verses in mind when he spoke of his responsibility to God and man (see Acts 18:6; 20:26,27). To help your hearers consider the seriousness of the situation (whether you are speaking to a crowd or just one person), you may like to say, “If you refuse to repent and you die in your sins, if your eyes and mine meet on the Day of Judgment, I am free from your blood because I haven’t held back from telling you the truth.”

Ezekiel 33:8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.9 Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.

Make room in your heart

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven . . .
–Matthew 5:43–45

When H. G. Wells summed up the influence of Jesus in history, he said, “Is it any wonder that this Galilean is too much for our small hearts?” And yet the heart of man, though small, is big enough for Christ to live in, if man will only make room for Him. Christ instilled the spirit of Christian love in His followers, so that they lived without malice and died without rancor. The love that Christ talked about can only be given to us by God. It is one of the fruits of the Spirit. When you come to Jesus Christ, He transforms you. Your past is forgiven. You receive a power to love men, beyond your natural ability to love.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Instill in me, dear Father, Your same Spirit of love which enabled the disciples to live with true charity.

More important than a skilled surgeon

As a Christian, you are more important than the most skilled of surgeons. Surgeons merely prolong death. God has chosen you to proclaim the message of everlasting life to dying humanity. Share the gospel whenever and wherever you can. Always carry gospel tracts, and when you can’t stop to talk with people, slip one into their hands and pray that God speaks to them through it.

Scientific facts in the Bible

The original Hebrew uses the past definite tense for the verb “finished,” indicating an action completed in the past, never again to occur. The creation was “finished”—once and for all. That is exactly what the First Law of Thermodynamics says. This law (often referred to as the Law of the Conservation of Energy and/or Mass) states that neither matter nor energy can be either created or destroyed.

It was because of this Law that Sir Fred Hoyle’s “Steady-State” (or “Continuous Creation”) Theory was discarded. Hoyle stated that at points in the universe called “irtrons,” matter (or energy) was constantly being created. But, the First Law states just the opposite. Indeed, there is no “creation” ongoing today. It is “finished” exactly as the Bible states.

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.

Prime Evil Tribe

I dreamed I was a doctor. I was stationed in the darkest of places, fighting a deadly disease among a very primitive tribe. This tribal group was particularly vicious by nature, and what is more, they did not like me at all.

Their primitive beliefs were certainly strange. They were utterly convinced that they were related to gorillas, and that they originally came from a puddle of water.

In the dream, I wanted to run from their delusions, but I couldn’t because I knew that they needed to be inoculated or they would all die. My job was to convince them that they were in serious danger and that they needed to hold still while I plunged a needle into their tender flesh—a difficult task indeed.

It was hard because these tribal people were particularly proud, and thought that they needed nothing and knew everything. They were so primitive in their thinking that they only believed in what they could see. They were especially resistant to the idea that there were unseen microorganisms, and that the deadly disease that was killing them was being promoted by their filthy lifestyle.

Then I awoke to the fact that it was not a dream at all, and that I have a difficult task ahead of me, but one from which I will not run.

2 Kings 8:8 And the king said to Hazael, “Take a present in your hand, and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the Lord by him, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this disease?’ ”

The Secret to Surrender

Just as you used to be slaves to all kinds of sin, so now you must let yourselves be slaves to all that is right and holy.
–Romans 6:19 (TLB)

We have heard the modern expression, “Don’t fight it—it’s bigger than both of us.” Those who are meek do not fight back at life. They learn the secret of surrender, or yielding to God. He then fights for us! Instead of filling your mind with resentments, abusing your body by sinful diversion, and damaging your soul by willfulness, humbly give all over to God. Your conflicts will disappear and your inner tensions will vanish into thin air. Then your life will begin to count for something. You will have the feeling of belonging to life. Boredom will melt away, and you will become vibrant with hope and expectation. Because you are meekly yielded, you will begin to “inherit the earth” of good things, which God holds in store for all who trust Him with their all.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Let me yield to You this day, Father, all my innermost thoughts. I cannot hide from You.

Prayer for today

Lord of the Harvest, there are still people in this world who have never heard the name of Jesus. Nor, therefore, have they heard that He will be the rightful “heir of all things.” I pray that Your Spirit will hasten the sending of the gospel to the remaining unreached peoples of the world.

Overwhelming temptation

The love of money will always be an overwhelming temptation until a man deals with the stumbling block of his iniquity (see 1 Tim. 6:9,10). Once sin is forgiven and he is given a new heart with new desires, the saved can see through the folly of chasing riches. It has been well said, “Man seeks both wealth and wisdom. Having found one, he seldom seeks the other.” The love of money may turn the head of a judge and cause him to pervert justice. But all the gold and silver in the world will not turn the head of the Judge of the universe on the Day of Wrath.

Ezekiel 7:19 ‘They will throw their silver into the streets, And their gold will be like refuse; Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them In the day of the wrath of the Lord; They will not satisfy their souls, Nor fill their stomachs, Because it became their stumbling block of iniquity.

What Heaven will be like

And there shall be no more curse; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him.
–Revelation 22:3

The Bible indicates that heaven will be a place of great understanding and knowledge of things that we never learned down here. Sir Isaac Newton, when an old man, said to one who praised his wisdom, “I am as a child on the seashore picking up a pebble here and a shell there, but the great ocean of truth still lies before me.” And Thomas Edison once said, “I do not know one millionth part of one percent about anything.” Many of the mysteries of God—the heartaches, trials, disappointments, tragedies, and the silence of God in the midst of suffering—will be revealed in heaven.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY
All the questions will be answered, loving Father, when I take my place in heaven to praise You.

Christian Shrinkage

Be ye . . . followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love as Christ also hath loved us. Ephesians 5:1–2

Why should we have to accept the idea held in some Christian circles that new converts will soon lose their first zeal and settle down to a life of dull religious routine? I believe that I carry the welfare of the saints in my heart, and it disturbs me that some Christians are satisfied to accept the title of “dead average.”

What happens? Can it be that the person who has held a joyful conversion becomes enamored of his experience, failing to keep his eyes fixed on the Lord?

Only engrossment with God can maintain perpetual spiritual enthusiasm because only God can supply everlasting novelty. In God every moment is new and nothing ever gets old. Of things religious we may become tired, even prayer may weary us; but God never!

Brothers and sisters, nothing can preserve the sweet savor of our first experience except to be preoccupied with God Himself! Let the new convert know that if he would grow instead of shrink, he must spend his nights and his days in communion with the triune God! -A.W. Tozer

Lord, I pray this morning that the activities of the day ahead will be anything but routine as I converse with You. I pray that I will experience spiritual enthusiasm as I live in the light of Your constant presence.

Incorporating the Law

Incorporating the Law into the gospel presentation does many things. It primarily brings the knowledge of sin (see Rom. 7:7), showing the sinner that he is a criminal and that God is his Judge. The Law (in the hand of the Holy Spirit) stops his mouth of justification and leaves him guilty before God (see Rom. 3:19,20). It reveals that he deserves nothing but judgment for his crimes. Like a faithful prosecutor, the Law of God points its accusing finger, and so the sinner’s stirred conscience bears witness and likewise points its finger at the criminal (see Rom. 2:15). The verdict is “guilty,” and the condemnation is just. I do my best to put him in the courtroom on the Day of Judgment, with the hope that he will understand the mercy that God offers him in Christ.

Jeremiah 50:7 All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, ‘We have not offended, Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, The Lord, tthe hope of their fathers.’

Check out and the Beatles

"I saw an advertisement recently where cameras were set up to watch a supermarket shopper’s reaction to a scenario. Just as he was about to go through the checkout, a man who had a single item, asked if he could step in front of him. Of course, the shopper kindly let him go first. Suddenly balloons dropped from the roof and music began to play-- because the man he let through won $50,000 for being the one-millionth-shopper. The camera then zoomed in on the shopper’s look of unbelief.

Of course this was just a setup and it was fascinating to watch his response. The intrigue probably comes because of our ability to identify with someone being that close to winning $50,000, and missing out.

Pete Best was the member of the Beatles who was dropped just before the music group exploded across the world, making the other members millionaires overnight. They were stacking platinum albums as he stacked loaves of bread in a delivery van in a factory. He was close, but he missed out.

Many are like that when it comes to getting to Heaven. They believe in God, perhaps go to church, own a few Bibles, but they’ve never been born again (see John chapter 3). They are close, but they are in danger of missing out—not on mere money, but on eternal life. Horrible that may be, it’s not the real tragedy. If they die in their sins, they will not only miss the eternal pleasures of Heaven, they will find themselves damned in a terrible place called “Hell.”

God forbid that we should be complacent about the salvation of those around us. Today, preach the gospel using words, or witness one-to-one, hand someone a gospel tract, or at least leave one somewhere for someone to find. If you can’t do any of these things, please pray for those who can."- Ray Comfort

God lavishes His goodness on the ungodly

It is good to point out, when witnessing, that God lavishes His goodness on the ungodly. He gives them eyes to see His creation, ears to enjoy good music, and taste buds to enjoy the wonderful array of food that His has created. He has given them life itself, yet they live in rebellion to His will and use His holy name as a cuss word to express disgust. This reveals the sin of ingratitude, and therefore a failure to obey the First Commandment.

Hosea 2:8 For she did not know That I gave her grain, new wine, and oil, And multiplied her silver and gold— Which they prepared for Baal.9 “Therefore I will return and take away My grain in its time And My new wine in its season, And will take back My wool and My linen, Given to cover her nakedness.

I'll fight

“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight; while children go hungry as they do now, I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight; I’ll fight to the very end!” William Booth

Walk humbly with your God

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.Micah 6:8

Even the most spiritually minded people have a difficult time escaping the temptation to love themselves. As soon as they see that they are better than others in some way, they begin to love themselves and look down on others. The Scripture provides us with a frightening example of this in the story of Saul. He was well thought of and had no equal in Israel (1 Samuel 9:2). He was filled with the Spirit of the Lord. But he didn't do what Micah demanded in this passage. Therefore, he fell into terrible disgrace and was rejected by God.

The church fathers spoke about the temptation to love ourselves in the following way: "No matter where you throw the head of a thistle, it will stand straight up." Similar to a thistle, this wicked attitude easily takes root in the hearts of believers. It's difficult for believers to avoid self-love. As Augustine stated, this is the only evil that sticks to good works. That's why God allows his people to slip into sin, just as he allowed Peter and David to fall. Shocked by their fall into sin, believers humble themselves. They're fearful of thinking of themselves too highly, and they want to keep in mind how weak they still are. This is why David cried out, "My sin is always before me" (Psalm 51:3).

Believers humble themselves by recognizing and looking at their weaknesses and sin. They try to avoid feeling proud of their works or of the gifts of the Spirit they have received from God. This is what it means "to walk humbly with your God." We should be genuinely modest and humble, wanting to remain in the background. We should never look for honor and praise for the good works we do.

Holy in Christ

God has made us holy in Christ. We have our “beautiful” feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, so that we can take the message of salvation to those who stand on unholy ground (see Rom. 10:15; Eph. 6:15).

Exodus 3:5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”

Q and A

Q: The fact that there are so many versions proves that the Bible has mistakes. Which one is right?

A: Skeptics often ask which Bible is right, and point to the fact that there are many versions. The implication is that each one is different, and therefore they have no credibility. How can they if they differ? They are right about the number of versions—there are thousands. There are Chinese versions for Chinese speakers, Russian versions the Russian people, Arabic versions, Korean versions, and so on. There are translations in modern English and in very old English. There are paraphrases, revised versions, large print, pocket size, Greek and Hebrew versions, and even an Amplified version. In fact, the Bible is the most translated book in the world, with at least some portion of it available in over 2,400 languages, spoken by 98 percent of the world’s population. All of these have been written so that people of any nation or culture can have access to and understand the Word of God. However, each translation is based on the original biblical texts. Due to the Dead Sea Scrolls, we can know that these texts are reliable.

Are there mistakes in the Bible? Yes, and the first one happened in the garden when man disobeyed God.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

Evolution's circular reasoning

Those who argue that the biblical timescale is wrong often commit the fallacy of begging the question—they merely assume the very thing they are trying to prove. Any argument that the earth is billions of years old must presuppose that rates and conditions are basically constant (e.g., no global Flood), and that the world was not supernaturally created in a fully-functioning state. However, the Bible denies these critical presuppositions. So, when an old-earth advocate uses these assumptions to conclude that the Bible is wrong (at least about the age of the earth), he has already tacitly assumed this. His conclusion that the Bible is wrong is based solely upon his assumption that the Bible is wrong. He is reasoning in a vicious circle.” Ken Ham and Jason Lisle

How much do the lost matter

By Steven D. Mathewson

When the religious leaders of Jesus' day criticized him for hanging out with sinners, Jesus told three stories about lost items: a lost sheep (Luke 15:1–7), a lost coin (Luke 15:8–10), and a lost son (Luke 15:11–32).

The shepherd left 99 sheep in open country to search for one lost sheep. He didn't say, "Oh well, 99 percent isn't bad. You're going to lose one once in a while."

The peasant woman swept the reed-covered dirt floor until she spied the lost coin. She didn't say, "Oh well, it's only a day's wage."

The father checks the road for the sign of his lost son's return. He didn't say, "Forget him. If he's going to be such an idiot, then I'll pour my life into my older son."

In each case, the value of what's lost dictated an intensive search.

Jesus is saying that the value of lost people demands an intensive response. Our failures to reach our communities stem more from faulty perspective than from faulty technique. Intensive searches happen only when we place a premium on the lost item. Technique usually takes care of itself when we share Jesus' perspective.

When we bump into people during the day, how do we view them? We notice that Todd is unfriendly. The truth is, he is lost. We think of Rob as a kind grandfather and a reliable neighbor. The truth is, he is lost. We view Sharon as a gorgeous blond with great potential as an interior decorator. The truth is, she's lost.

If people are really lost, and if these lost people are valuable, then an intensive search-and-rescue mission is in order. When we value lost people as Jesus did, outreach will happen, and more people will sing, "I once was lost, but now am found, 'twas blind, but now I see."

Luke 15:4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?

Function of the Law

“The Law is the Word in which God teaches and tells us what we are to do and not to do, as in the Ten Commandments. Now wherever human nature is alone, without the grace of God, the Law cannot be kept, because since Adam’s fall in paradise man is corrupt and has nothing but a wicked desire to sin and in his heart cannot be favorably disposed toward the Law, as we know by our own experience. For there is no one who would not rather have no Law at all, and everyone finds and feels within himself that while it is difficult to be pious and do good, it is easy to be wicked and to do evil. And this difficulty or this unwillingness to do what is good prevents us from keeping God's Law; for what is kept with dislike, difficulty, and unwillingness, rates before God as not having been kept at all. And so the Law of God convinces us by our experience that we are naturally wicked, disobedient, lovers of sin, and enemies of God's commandments.” Martin Luther

Son Stroke

Two men were crawling through a desert, dying of thirst. One man managed to get to his feet, and stumbled over a small rise. To his utter surprise he found an oasis of cool, fresh water. He fell into the water, drank to his heart’s content, and ran back to tell his dying friend the good news.

He said, “There’s an oasis of water over that rise. Come with me, drink, and you will live!” The dying man looked up, and said through parched lips, “You liar! I don’t believe the water is there...and you are a naïve fool to believe it. Don’t try to push your so-called water down my throat.

“I have proof that you are deceived—that hill you stumbled over is millions of years old. Besides, it’s my life, and I choose to stay here and die, you narrow-minded fool!”

Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37,38).

But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Christ can be found now!

“At Dublin a young man found Christ. He went home and lived so godly and so Christlike a life that two of his brothers could not understand what had wrought the change in him. They left Dublin and followed us to Sheffield, and there found Christ. They were in earnest. But, thanks be to God, Christ can be found now. I firmly believe every reader can find Christ now, if you will seek for Him with all your heart. He says, ‘Call upon me.’” D. L. Moody

His judgements

We need not hide verses that speak of God killing whom He will. All of His judgments are righteous and true altogether, and the One who gave us life has the right to take it from all who sin (see 1 Sam. 2:6; Job 12:10). If God were to give humanity absolute justice, we all would be struck down the moment we sinned. However, He has extended His mercy toward us and let us live, giving us opportunity to repent (see 2 Pet. 3:9).

Deuteronomy 32:39 ‘Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.40 For I raise My hand to heaven, And say, “ As I live forever,41 If I whet My glittering sword, And My hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to My enemies, And repay those who hate Me.

Eternal separation from God

Modern preachers often tell a sinner that if he dies without Christ’s forgiveness he will be “separated from God” forever. It’s what I call a "fear of man cliché"—it’s a substitute for the uncomfortable topic of hell. There are a number of other unbiblical phrases the modern church has invented that fall in the same category, such as a "Christ-less eternity" and a "lost eternity." But since the godless don’t want God in this life, how is the threat of being without Him in the next life going to awaken them? Modern preachers have fed the sinner the lie that there is an alternative to hell, when there is not. It is not easy to say, but if a sinner dies in his sins, he doesn't go to a “Christless eternity,” but to a place of conscious torment called "hell." Death is a mere down payment for his sins; hell is his full wages. (For a biblical description of hell, see Rev. 1:18 comment.)

So don’t be guilty of failing to preach “the whole counsel of God” (see Acts 20:26,27) and warning the lost of what awaits them on Judgment Day. They will not be able to get away from the God they so despise. Our God fills the heavens and the earth, and there is nowhere we can go that is outside His presence. He presides even over hell (see Psa. 139:7,8; Jer. 23:24; Rev. 14:10).

Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in thell, behold, You are there.
