Skeptics argue that some verses say God’s anger does not last forever (Psa. 30:5; Jer. 3:12; Mic. 7:18), contradicting others that say God’s anger lasts forever (Jer. 17:4; Matt. 25:46).
There are two types of God’s anger mentioned in these verses. The first is a reference to His temporal anger against sin. Because He is merciful, He forgives those who turn to Him in true repentance. For example, in Jer. 3:11–13 God is speaking to sinful Israel: “I will not remain angry forever. Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God.” However, Matt. 25:46 is a fearful reference to those who are the damned—those who refuse to repent and therefore die in their sins. One is a temporal anger, the other is eternal.
Micah 7:18 Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.
